You just finished writing a riveting, engaging blog post for your blog. Now all you need is a graphic that conveys that. People say a photo is worth 1,000 words and this is definitely true when it comes to social media. If you aren’t convinced you need to invest a little time into graphic creation, just look at what Hubspot said the importance of visual content:
“Visual content is more than 40 times more likely to get shared on social media than other types of content.”
Okay, you know the importance of blog graphics. Here is how anyone can create beautiful graphics for free.
Step 1: Find your image.
Find a bright, clean image that has to do with the topic that your blog post covers. There are lots of websites where you can download free images but a few that I would recommend include:
PicJumbo : Like most free stock photo sites this site includes both free and premium pictures. PicJumbo is nice because it has a lot of really great quality photos and is searchable.
Canva: Lots of bloggers love Canva. Once you create an account you can view their free stock photos under the “elements” tab. ALL of their stock images are great quality and very professional looking but they do not have as many free photos as the other sites listed.
Pixabay: The other two sites have a better overall quality of pictures (in my opinion) but Pixabay has a really large selection and has the search option with is a big time saver.
Pro tip: When I am searching for a graphic I usually come across several images I like, even if they are not quite right for the topic I am looking for. Create a Pinterest Board and pin them (or save the links to this images in a Word/Google doc) to save for later use. This will save a lot of time for future posts.
Step 2: Create a Canva account.
If you haven’t already, create a Canva account. It is free and will really take your graphics to the next level. It is basically a more user friendly version of Photoshop or Illustrator. They also have tons of pre-made layouts that are great for beginners to get an idea of what fonts and colors look good together.
Keep in mind other bloggers and businesses might use the same layout, so you can switch things up with your brand colors, fonts, and photos.
Step 3: Upload your picture and add text.
Canva is super easy to use even for beginners. After you upload your photo, add a short description of what the article is about. I don’t suggest using the exact title of the blog post because that will already be on the page. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:
- People like lists, they show the article will be easy to read and to the point.
- Keep the text on the image short, just enough to grab attention. People can read more about the subject in the post.
- Make sure the text stands out. Light font on dark backgrounds and vice versa.
If you really want to take things to the next level, try A/B testing and create several graphics for the same post. After a while you will see what works best for your blog. If you are having trouble getting your blog to take off or getting people to share your posts on social media, creating an eye grabbing graphic can be the key to create a positive first impression, drive more traffic to your site, and improve social engagement.
